Company Overview: Easy and Affordable Pet Insurance
Petplan was founded in 2003 by a young married couple who were forced to max out their credit cards and move to a smaller apartment to pay off an emergency vet bill for their cat. Today the company is run by a team of over 200 pet lovers providing simple and affordable pet insurance for dog and cat owners in the U.S. and Canada.
Petplan offers a single, customizable accident and illness policy with deductibles as low as $250 and optional unlimited annual coverage. Although the company doesn’t offer coverage for routine and preventive pet care, its basic policy goes above and beyond what many other companies offer.
Petplan receives a rating of four out of five stars on Trustpilot1 and an Average rating on Yelp.2 Most positive reviews on Trustpilot cite the company’s excellent customer service and fast claims processing. Some reviewers on Yelp, however, fault Petplan for denying their claims, though whether this is due to a confusion in their policy exclusions or a genuine issue is unclear.
Petplan’s insurance policies are underwritten by XL Specialty Insurance Company which has an A+ rating for financial stability from AM Best.3
Policies Available: Accident and Illness
Petplan offers a single customizable accident and illness policy. Premiums are based on the age, type, and breed of your pet as well as where you live. Using Petplan’s online quote generator, you can build a plan from the following choices:
Deductible: $250, $300, $500
Annual coverage limit: $5,000, $15,000, unlimited
Reimbursement: 70%, 80%, 90%
While many pet insurers will only cover older pets with an accident-only policy, Petplan offers accident and illness coverage for pets 10 years and older with a set $15,000 annual limit, $750 deductible, and 70% reimbursement for covered services.
The following are covered by Petplan’s accident and illness policy:
Accidental injuries and illnesses
Veterinary exam fees
Imaging and ultrasound
Non-routine dental treatments
Surgery and rehabilitation
Referral and specialist treatment
Petplan requires you to wait 15 days after your date of enrollment before you file any accident or illness claims. Your policy also won’t cover hip dysplasia, cruciate, and patella conditions for the first six months, but you can reduce this to 30 days if your vet submits a report that your pet has healthy knees.
Petplan also requires that your pet be examined by a veterinarian within 60 days before the start of your policy. If not, you will need to have your pet examined at your own expense within 30 days after your policy start date.
Although Petplan doesn’t offer accident-only insurance or a wellness plan, it makes up for it with generous coverage built into its accident and illness policies.
Petplan’s accident and illness policy is a bit more comprehensive than those of other companies we’ve reviewed. It even includes some coverage that others only offer in their add-on wellness plans.
Comprehensive Dental Protection
Where most pet insurers will only offer coverage for broken teeth and extractions due to injury or illness, Petplan covers all dental injuries and diseases as long as your pet gets an annual dental exam and receives treatment to prevent illness or injury.
Advertising and Reward
Petplan also offers reimbursement up to your annual limit for any advertising costs incurred from trying to locate your pet if it gets lost. You can also get reimbursed for what the company calls a “reasonable reward.”
You will need to notify the police as well as five veterinary clinics and animal shelters in the area where your pet was last seen and submit your police reference or case number and written confirmation of your report along with your claim to get reimbursed.
Petplan will also reimburse you up to $1,000 for boarding fees if your pet needs to be hospitalized. There is no copay or deductible required. Coverage is not offered for boarding your pet if you go on vacation.
In addition to traditional medical treatments, Petplan also offers coverage for holistic therapies and treatments, including homeopathy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and laser therapy performed by a licensed veterinarian.
Virtual Vet Visits
Petplan also offers up to $1,000 reimbursement per year for virtual vet visits (video chat, call, or text) with a licensed vet. There is no copay or deductible required.
Loss Due to Theft or Straying
Petplan also offers reimbursement if your pet gets stolen or lost and is never recovered. Your policy will reimburse you for the lesser of the current local humane society adoption fee or a flat $150 if you have no record of what you paid for your pet.
As with its Advertising and Reward coverage, Petplan requires you to notify five veterinary clinics and animal shelters in the area where your pet was last seen and submit your police reference or case number and written confirmation of your report to get reimbursed.
Death From Injury or Illness
Petplan will reimburse you for the death of your pet resulting from an accident or illness. You are entitled to the lesser of the current local humane society adoption fee or a flat reimbursement of $150 if you have no formal proof of what you paid for your pet.
If you must cancel your travel plans due to your pet getting sick or injured, Petplan will reimburse you for any travel and accommodation costs up to your annual limit. This applies to any cancellations that occur during or up to seven days prior to your trip
Petplan will reimburse you for advertising for your lost pet, but be sure to follow the requirements for notifying the police and animal shelters before filing your claim.
Plan Exclusions: Exemptions for Curable Pre-Existing Conditions
Standard with most pet insurers, Petplan doesn’t offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, However, it does cover curable medical conditions providing your pet shows no signs of recurrence for these conditions for at least 12 months. If the same curable condition reoccurs, it will be permanently excluded from coverage.
Services excluded from coverage also include:
Routine & wellness care
Cosmetic & elective procedures
Prescription food to treat or prevent illness or injury
Whelping or nursing
Grooming or bathing
Time and travel to a veterinarian’s premises or hospital
Intentional injury or abuse
Treatments or preventive treatments for parasites
Racing, coursing, commercial guarding, organized fighting
Cost: Affordable and Customizable Coverage
Petplan’s premiums are among the most affordable we’ve come across. Because the company offers no additional riders, you won’t see your costs creep up as you add more coverage options. As with most pet insurance, Petplan’s premiums do increase for older pets.
Using the online quote generator, we were able to build the following two policies.
Accident and illness insurance for a mixed-breed, medium-sized (23–70 lbs.), three-year-old, female dog with $15,000 coverage, a $500 deductible, and 80% reimbursement came to $29.96 per month.
Accident and illness insurance for a domestic longhair, one-year-old, male cat with $15,000 coverage, a $500 deductible, and 80% reimbursement came to $20.16 per month.
One thing to note is that Petplan has a minimum premium of $20.16 per month. That means the one-year-old cat above would cost $20.16 per month for a $500 deductible, $5,000 annual limit, and 70% reimbursement as well as a policy with a $250 deductible, unlimited annual coverage, and 90% reimbursement. As a result, you may end up paying more to insure a younger pet with Petplan than you would with another provider.
To be reimbursed for any claims, Petplan requires you to have your pet examined and treated by a vet within 48 hours of an illness or injury.
Although the company doesn’t offer discounts for insuring multiple pets, you can get a 15% premium credit for each year you go without a paid claim up to a maximum of 30%. Petplan also gives you the option to pay your premiums monthly or annually.
Customer Service: Online Portal, App, Chat & More
Petplan makes it easy to submit a claim and photos of important documents online or via its mobile app. You can also print and submit a claim form by email, fax, or mail. Once approved, payments are typically processed the next business day.
Petplan offers customer service by phone and email Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET.
Final Verdict: Basic Pet Insurance That’s Not So Basic
Based on our methodology, we were impressed by how much coverage Petplan offers in just one simple accident and illness policy. Although you won’t get coverage for routine care, you can enjoy many emergency benefits that other providers don’t offer.
We would like to have seen a few more deductible and annual coverage options as well as a discount for multiple pets, and the inclusion of a wellness rider would have created a well-rounded package for whole-pet coverage as well.
Nonetheless, for a simple accident and insurance policy, Petplan delivers more than you’d expect for your money with coverage for lost pets, vacation cancellation, and more, giving you the peace of mind of knowing your pet is taken care of in just about any emergency.
